Barbara van Benthem Jutting

To the Dutch East Indies

In the previous blog we saw that in August 1926 the International Academic Women’s Congress was organized in Amsterdam. We then ended with anecdotes from The Dutch East Indies. We’ll start with that now. On September 20, 1926, Tera writes in her diary: Baasje has a letter from Dammerman that he is coming to Holland […]

Womens Congress

The previous blog was about Tera’s relationship with Tip Westerdijk and therefore also with his sister Johanna (Hans) Westerdijk (1883-1961). Hans Westerdijk had in many ways followed the same path as Tera. Through secondary education she had ended up at the HBS, which at that time did not yet grant access to university exams. She

Tip Westerdijk

In an earlier blog we saw that Tera had a short courtship with Hans Bierens de Haan. After she has moved into rooms with a landlady, she doesn’t need to consider her father as much as before. For example, it says in her diary: (..) we ate in town, then went to the Zoologist evening

Family ties

In the previous blog we saw how Tera went to work in the Zoological Museum and helped furnish the Heimansdiorama. In addition to all that work, there is the family, and that can sometimes be a hassle. The Van Benthem Jutting clan is small, which means that everyone knows each other and of course also

The Heimans Diorama

Now that Tera has graduated, she is seriously put to work in the museum. In addition to maintaining the collection, she is involved in organizing exhibitions. Eli Heimans (1861-1914) was a Dutch primary school teacher and nature lover. Together with Jac. P. Thijsse, he was at the basis of natural history education in the Netherlands.

Graduation

As we have seen in the past blogs, Tera is busy. She parties, is busy with the various associations and  clubs, attends lectures, goes on holiday and on study trips. In the spring of 1924 she goes to Brittany with some of her university friends; collecting and sightseeing, the cathedral of Quimper, the dolmen and

Corrie is getting married

In the previous blog we ran into Non Scheffer, a friend of Tera’s from her student days. Tera’s first friend is Corrie Prince. Corrie was born on 17 May 1899 in Hoorn as the daughter of a doctor. Her parents are both from Amsterdam. In the early 1900’s they settled on the St. Annastraat in

With Non to Helgoland

Last time I wrote about the Rolpensclub; one of the regular participants of the rolpensclub is Non Scheffer. Johanna Scheffer (1887-1954) is a cousin of Johanna Westerdijk. Non also studies biology in Amsterdam. Tera’s first contact with Non date from 1919, when they walk on the beach together, chat about everything together and hug the

The Coffee table

The photos of the flying adventures are shared with the rolpensclub:  Big coffee party: Weber, Baasje, Bussy and van Tienhoven. Tienhoven is very determined to see my flight photos and drawings.. Weber is chuckling out loud and telling silly stories about Treub not wanting to get married. From the moment Tera works in the museum,

Up in the air

The first adventure I myself heard about my “aunt” Tera was that she was the first van Benthem Jutting to have flown. Growing up in the 1960s, when civil aviation was expensive but already quite common, I didn’t think that was terribly special, even though I had never seen an airplane up close. Now I
